Мне доставляет удовольствие написать предисловие к русскому изданию моей книги «Революция и преобразование обществ. Сравнительное изучение цивилизаций». В данном предисловии я хотел бы поднять тему соотношения между великими революциями и динамикой «осевого времени», в котором они сформировались, в широком сопоставительном плане, уделяя особое внимание месту сектантства в этих революциях.

Shmuel Eisenstadt, the Rose Isaacs Professor of Sociology Emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was given an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. "Long before it became conventional to think in terms of global forces," according to the citation, "you were applying a comparative-studies approach and doing influential research on Jewish, Japanese, and European cultures." A sociologist known to be a synthesizer and a bridge-builder to other disciplines, Eisenstadt has given several seminars at Duke.

SHMUEL NOAH EISENSTADT was born in Warsaw (Poland) on September 10, 1923, he has been teaching at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1946-1990), from 1959 to 1990 as Rose Issacs Professor of Sociology, Professor Emeritus since 1990.

Shmuel Eisenstadt is Rose Isaacs Professor of Sociology Emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and works at the Van Leer Center. In his work he applies a comparative-studies approach to Jewish, Japanese, and European cultures. He is known worldwide as a synthesizer and a bridge-builder to other disciplines, and for having coined the concept of "multiple modernities", according to which each civilization has its own modernity, with its own strengths and weaknesses.
