The American Sociological Assocation's (ASA) Sorokin Lecture has been a longstanding opportunity for a distinguished ASA member to deliver a lecture at a regional sociological society meeting. Since 1967, each year the winner of the ASA Distinguished Scholarly Publication Award has traveled to a regional association and speaks about the book that had been honored. A restricted fund, named for past ASA President Pitirim Sorokin, underwrote the costs for the visiting lecturer.

Pitirim A. Sorokin was a major figure in social thought in the previous century. People have been intrigued, challenged and inspired by his ideas, and he has had a lasting influence on methods and theory in the social sciences. He began as a criminologist, and was heavily affected by a dramatic personal history and shattering historical events. His personal history is complex and his social / criminological theories would still be considered unorthodox. Academic conflicts affected his career and the acceptance of his ideas in ways that are still instructive to those interested in the political realties of academia.

Sorokin (1889-1968) rose from a peasant childhood in Russia to become one of the most erudite, insightful, and critical figures in the history of sociology. He was, however, considered both a pioneer and an outcast.
